Thank you Darnell McDonald

I don’t expect any of you to go out and pick up my new favorite Red Sox player, Darnell McDonald. I want to talk about him though and will spin this back around to fantasy baseball by the end. I would first like to briefly recount his history. Just to review the last two nights, he may have sparked a Red Sox team that desperately needed something by hitting two key home runs in the last two games. On a Red Sox team emphasizing “run prevention” (my new least favorite phrase) the Sox need to get some hitters in the lineup. Figures a washed up minor leaguer would be an upgrade.  He is a 31 year old veteran of the minors so his home runs were clearly a miracle. This miracle might have been foreshadowed on Opening Day:

I can truly say I never heard of McDonald before his call-up. He proceeded to have one of the best pinch hit performances in Red Sox history with a home run and wall-ball single that gave Red Sox fans hope in what has been a dismal season so far. He followed this up with a game with another home run and two walks, scoring on one of them. While McDonald has no long-term fantasy value whatsoever (his short-term will be discussed in our advice posts tomorrow), let this be a lesson to you that role players often determine the outcomes of games, whether in fantasy or real life. Pujols can’t win you the league by himself, you better have some damn good late round picks if you want to compete with me.

McDonald was a first round draft pick by the O’s in 1997.
